School holds the whip hand: it has the possibility to change and improve our future. It is the most important institution. It educates and shapes people and for this reason it is fundamental to give school more quality. To improve school and teachers’ training quality means to improve many people’s life. In fact teaching is a profession which acts as the foundation of the society. If it’s true that our behaviour and our personality are influenced by our family environment (above all during our first five years of life, as many experts affirm), it’s also true that our attitude is transformed – improved or worsened – by school education.
However, the most important question is: how does school educate – and shape – people?
In Italy school is not projected into the future. It is static, because it lives in the past. I don’t maintain that subjects like History, Latin or Greek are useless. I think the real problem regards how they are studied by students and, of course, taught by teachers. You can study the past also in order to know how to face your future or, at least, your present, instead of studying it in a way which is an end in itself. For instance, History has many things to teach us and we should learn from it to use mankind experience to live in a better future. School should educate students for their working future, because nowadays vision of future seems to be the foggiest ever. Especially because of economic uncertainty. So now school should use the past as a source for the future.
Nevertheless, to say the truth, future depends also on parents. Yeah, parents. They leave the biggest track on their children, undoubtedly. As I have already written, our first five years are very delicate for our growth. In our mind there are installed habits and thoughts, which can be good or damaging. They work like files in a computer software, that’s to say our mind. The big problem is that it doesn’t exist the trash where you can delete those files you don’t like. It’s a procedure, which is more complex.
To cut a long story short, the two main ingredients are:
- Parents, who bring up their children in a phisically and, above all, mental way;
- Teachers, who teach students how they can learn from the past, face their working future and live effectively in a society.
